Labor Day Weekend? Indeed!

John points to the kitchen window he broke
when he threw a rock at some neighborhood
children who were laughing at and making
fun of his shorts and the T-shirt he was wearing
promoting Notre Dame. (Just kidding)

John is tilling the lawn area in the back
yard while Gloria rakes up the dead leaves
and grass. We're getting prepared to
reseed the lawn that has been infested by
Johnson grass and weeds spawned by
drought and hot weather.

John, Sarah, and little Audrie came to visit us for the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Sarah and Audrie drove down from Richmond on Friday after Sarah finished her work day. They picked up John at Sarah's parent's home in Sandy, Utah, where John stays during the week while he works in Murray, Utah as an apprentice electrician. They hope to be able to move closer to his work some time within the next six months or so. Sarah works in Preston, Idaho as a social worker for Idaho State Social Services. She wants to be able to quit working after they make the move so she can be a stay-home mother and take care of their daughter, Audrie, who is nearly nine months old. Anyway, they picked up John and then continued on down to Price. I was alone all evening because Gloria had to pull an extra-curricular duty selling tickets at the Carbon vs. Altamont football game. She arrived home after 9:00 p.m. I stayed up and watched the news and then I went to bed. John and Sarah arrived sometime after that.

On Saturday, we all slept in a little later than usual, for me at least. Gloria made breakfast of bacon, eggs, and hash browns with orange juice. Then the television was turned on and tuned in to Notre Dame football. John is a fanatic for the "Irish." He has all kinds of Notre Dame memorabilia and clothing. They played Georgia Tech, but they didn't do very well. In fact, they played terrible. They ultimately lost 33 to 3. Mid way through the game, BYU and Arizona started playing on another channel. So, we spent time changing channels back and forth until it was pretty obvious that ND was going to lose. Then we concentrated on the BYU - U of A game. As it turned out, the Cougars were "hot" and the Wildcats "were not." BYU was in control the full game, both offensively and defensively. They came out victorious with a score of 20 to 7. Arizona's points weren't put on the board until less than a minute was left on the clock. By then, the Cougar second string defense was on the field. With their last-minute touchdown, the Wildcats were able save their record for 30 years without a shutout on opening day. It was sweet for BYU, though. James bought a season pass again this year, but for one ticket only instead of two. He and three other fellows from the Kaysville area decided to buy season tickets near each other and then take turns driving down as a group. I remember fondly the times James and I used to go to the home games together at Cougar Stadium, now the LaVell Edwards Stadium. It was great fun. My present health condition precludes me from doing that any more. So I settle for watching them on the tube. Go Cougars!!

We all attended church together yesterday. The congregation was a little sparse. It was probably due to the Labor Day Holiday. Afterward, we just lounged around the house and ended up watching a Jimmy Stewart video called "Rear Window," which was a Alfred Hitchcock mystery. Everyone was down for the count by 10:30 p.m.

John and Sarah will be heading back north today. This morning Gloria and John did some tilling in the back yard. Uncle Arland brought a tiller over for us to use on Saturday. When he was reminded that it had been my birthday the day before, August 31, he said I could have the tiller as a birthday present. He said he had another one that was smaller and it met his needs just fine. We were looking at having to rent one at the rate of $75.00 a day. Plus we would have had to find some way to get it and return it after we were finished. Since Gloria will be the one to do the actual tilling, it will be nice to have it here all the time so she can use it a little bit at a time over a period of days rather than having to wear herself out doing the whole back yard in one day. It's another blessing that Heavenly Father brought together for us. He does that all the time. Like they say, "God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform." John spent about an hour working with the tiller this morning while Gloria did some raking and cleaning up a lot of dead leaves and weeds. After tilling up all of the back yard, we want to reseed it in grass to replace that which is full of Johnson Grass and weeds.

James called yesterday afternoon. Stephanie and the children: Laura, Sara, and Bradley, went to Prescott, Arizona last week to visit her mom and dad. Her mother has had some heart problems that put her in the hospital for a while. James mentioned that he was thinking of coming down to see us next weekend. That will be nice, to be able to entertain house guests for two weekends in a row.

I went to see my doctor on the 29th of August. After having an arterial blood gas test, the results showed a marked improvement in both my Oxygen saturation and CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) levels. My Oxygen saturation went up from 89 to 91 and my CO2 went down from 75 to 64. That's the lowest my CO2 has been since I left the hospital a year ago last spring. Needless to say, Gloria and I were both pleasantly surprised. And so was Dr. Ross. Now if I can only maintain that far into the future. Wish us luck.

Well, I'm running out of things to say and it's time for me to go take my afternoon nap. So, I'll sign off for now until the next time. Take care.

Dad
