Wednesday-- It Was A Busy Day

It started out with a trip to the eye doctor. I've started having some blurred vision in my left eye lately. That's the one I had the cataract removed from two years ago this summer. And, since neither Gloria or I have had our eyes checked this year and the deadline for having it done so that it will be covered by our insurance, we both went together at 11:30 a.m. this morning. The dark glasses are for eye protection after they were dilated during the exams. Remember the old saying, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera?" Well, we look pretty cheesy don't we.


Roger's fingers are sore today because he spent about four hours cracking and shelling some of the English walnuts that the Merrells gave us last fall. Gloria's plans are to use the unbroken shells for part of her Sharing Time in Primary for the month of September. The soft skin covering on the shells were still either partially or wholly intack and then basically baked on after being exposed to the hot sun. It was hard breaking it off the actual shell before doing the cracking to get at the meat part of the nut. This box shows the shells he was able to use with both sides unbroken and then kept together with rubber bands. There's still more to be done before all of the nuts are cracked. We learned in a gardening book that broken up nut shells from walnuts, almonds, peanuts, etc. are good to put back into the soil as part of mulching and/or composting. So, that's what we're going to do, by golly. That's what we're going to do.


Gloria spent until after 10:00 p.m. bottling some vegetables from our garden. She did 19 pints of beets and 5 quarts of beans. Our tomatoes are growing, but they're still green and won't be ready to start picking for at least a couple of weeks. We're looking forward to doing some carrots and squash as well as more beans and beets. We even have some water melons coming along. Isn't that wonderful?

Tonight, Gloria is busy working on getting scrapbooks caught up to date. Roger has been spending the day reading and working on getting some of our important documents gathered up and put in one location so that they can be readily accessible. Plus, Aunt Rita is working on the Freeman and Gladys Williams History and has asked Roger to help create a pictorial pedigree of the Williams Family. There never seems to be a dull moment around here.
